How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination can take up to ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
