FAQ

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. Make sure the pot is deep enough for the root ball to be held. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. A second option is soil testing. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

You're not wrong. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

Which type of lighting best suits indoor plant growth?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They are also consistent in lighting, and do not flicker or dimm. How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
