How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
