How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination can take up to ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. Add potting mix to each container. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. To check how much water your plants need, you can use a rain gauge. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
