What to do in the January Garden

homestead gardening ideas

January plants in the garden may include annuals, perennials, herbs, and vegetables. This is the best time to plant roquettes, sweet peas, statice, and other cool-season vegetables. You should plant vegetables such as collards and spinach a few weeks prior to the last frost. You can also plant edibles, such as Swiss chard Brightlights and globe artichokes. You can also grow purple and green oak leaf lettuce for colour. This makes an excellent foil to summer flowering perennials.

We wish everyone a happy year as we start a new one. However, you should remember that winter can cause damage to many garden structures, and wildlife needs food. You should also leave certain areas of your garden uncut until the springtime, although you can prune plants such as wisteria or rhododendron bushes to just above their bud. This will keep their foliage and flowers looking attractive for several months.

You can attract wildlife to your garden by planting seeds now. You can start with bird feeders. However, you may also want to invest in a bug hotel. These are a great way to attract more birds and other wildlife. You can plant trees during this period. You should plan in advance for these projects. In addition to your wish list, January is the ideal time to plant some trees and shrubs.

You can make the most of the warmer, dry days to plant. If you don't want to spend too much time in the garden, make sure to mulch and protect the soil around the base of your plants. Remember to prune deciduous trees before they leaf out. Do not remove dead or damaged branches. You can also apply dormant season sprays or oils to protect against peach leaf curl and overwintering pest eggs.

Because it is not too cold to plant, you can still plant in January in Zone 6. If temperatures get warmer, seedlings can be transplanted. If you're planting seeds outdoors, make sure to cover them with row covers. Additionally to the seeds you can direct-sow herbs (geranium and coleus) or plant them early in the months.

Plants that are winter dormant are also available bare-root. These plants include roses and deciduous tree, as well as wisteria. You can even plant artichokes in bare-root form if you're not sure how to plant them. These won't survive if they're not well soaked. This allows you to plant them quickly.

FAQ

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Soil testing is another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

How often should I water my indoor plant?

Indoor plants require watering at least once a day. You can maintain humidity in the house by watering. Humidity can be vital for plants that are healthy.

Can I grow vegetables indoors?

Yes, it is possible to grow vegetables in a greenhouse during winter. You will need to purchase a greenhouse or grow lights. Before buying a greenhouse, check with your local laws.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It depends upon the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

How To

Basil Growing Tips

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
