FAQ

How do I know what type of soil I have?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. Soil testing is another option. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

Which type of lighting best suits indoor plant growth?

Because they emit less heat, floralescent lights are great for indoor gardening. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

How often should I water indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering once every two days. You can maintain humidity in the house by watering. Healthy plants require humidity.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

How do you prepare the soil?

It's easy to prepare the soil for a vegetable gardening. First, get rid of all weeds. Then, add organic matter such as composted manure, leaves, grass clippings, straw, or wood chips. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
