FAQ

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. The soil could dry out if you plant too early. This could lead to root rot. Be aware of diseases like bacterial wilt which can quickly kill plants.

What is your favorite vegetable garden layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, it is best to plant vegetables in the same area as your home. You should plant your vegetables in groups if you live outside of the city. This will ensure maximum yield.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

How can I find out what type of soil my house has?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. Soil tests are another option. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. Make sure your pot is drained to prevent the tree from getting rotted by excess moisture. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
