FAQ

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

What vegetables are good to grow together and what are the best?

Because they are both fond of similar soil conditions and temperatures, it is easy to grow peppers and tomatoes together. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. It is important to be aware that bacteria wilt can quickly kill plants.

How much space does a vegetable garden require?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
