FAQ

What vegetables can you grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

How can I tell what kind of soil is mine?

You can tell by looking at the color of the dirt. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Soil tests are another option. These tests assess the soil's nutritional content.

When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. You can have your farm right at your house!

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. You should not plant tomatoes too soon. The soil can dry out, and the roots could rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
