FAQ

How do you prepare the soil?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. The first step is to remove any weeds that may be in the area where your vegetable garden will be planted. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. After watering, wait for plants to sprout.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It all depends on what kind of plant you have. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's like having your farm right in your home.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! If you have limited space, fruit trees can be grown indoors. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
