How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. You should sow the seeds at a depth of 1/2 inch in small pots. The pots should be covered with clear plastic wrap. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
