How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
