Stop feeding your herb plants. As the days get shorter, and the weather becomes cooler, the plants become more vulnerable to frost. After your herbs reach this stage, you can stop fertilizing. Winter is very important for herbs, so heavy pruning can cause severe damage. As the days become shorter, their natural response to the seasons will be more obvious. They will respond to the weather by producing a higher level of winter hardiness.

The best time to start growing herbs is 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds in a small pot or on a seedling tray. Seedlings will start to sprout after a few days. Continue watering them until they have four real leaves. When you start to notice new green shoots, plant them. You can dry the leaves and keep them in storage for winter. This will keep them from going to seed.

Herbs don't have to be pickedy. They can be harvested at many stages of development. For best results, prune herbs when they reach six to eight inches in height. If your herbs are still in growth at this stage, you may be able to cut them multiple times. Clipping and pinching back the branches will keep them bushy and encourage further growth. A good way to stimulate growth is to keep leaves and stems in storage for winter. You can also plant flower buds.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
