How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. You should choose carefully where to place your basil. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
