April Gardening Tips: What to Do in the Gardens This Month

gardening in april

Spring gardening will see you doing a lot of the transplanting and weeding in April. These tasks will make it easier to manage your summer workload. Also, mulch should be spread on your soil. You will see a more lush, beautiful garden if you prepare it now. You don't have to wait until then, if not now, it is the right time.

When the soil starts to warm up in April it is time to fertilize. You can sprinkle general fertiliser around the base of your shrubs and plants, including flowers and vegetables. All options are available: Chicken Manure, bone, Growmore and blood fish. Also, slow-release pellets are possible. When applying them, wear gloves and dig them in gently. Spring-luring shrubs or trees can also be planted.

Preparing the soil for spring flowers is important when you plant flowers in April. Cyclamen flowers, which bloom in April need less water than those that bloom in February. You should choose a spot in the house that receives enough sun and moisture. This flowering bulb should bloom in May. The stalk will provide nutrients to the flowering bulb. After planting the bulbs in April, scatter the seeds in a place that is sunny, but not overly warm.

Plant ornamental shrubs such as apricots to create a productive autumn garden. These shrubs provide four-season interest, and can be harvested as soon as the tender stalks emerge. To ensure your rhubarb plants don't suffer, it is important to not over-prune them. It's best to keep at least two-thirds the stems in place. Lastly, you should focus on maintaining your lawn during this time of year. While it's tempting to prune shrubs and trees in April, you should know the plants before starting the pruning process, as wrong timing can lead to failure to flower.

Spring is a great time for planting balcony plants, such as fuchsias and begonias. While balcony plants should be watered frequently, you can also plant a variety of house plants such as pansies, horned violets, and various other early bloomers. To protect your plants from pests and diseases, be sure to inspect for signs early in the season. You can also add beauty to your garden by using a lawn mash to draw in passers-by.

To get started in gardening, if you don't have any experience, you might want to buy a starter plant. These plants are already in cultivation and come with detailed planting instructions. If you're interested in planting potatoes, consider buying sets, which are more hardy than seed potatoes. You should plant your onion, garlic, as well as potato seedlings in March. It is a good idea to plant root vegetables and potatoes in April.

FAQ

What equipment do I need to grow vegetables?

You're not wrong. A shovel, trowel and watering container are all you need.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

How do you prepare the soil?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. You must first remove all weeds from the area you wish to plant vegetables. Next, add organic matter like composted manure and leaves, grass clippings or straw. Then water the plants well and wait for them to sprout.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
